Color Modes: RGB vs CMYK

Understand the core physical differences between CMYK & RGB models.

Core Concepts

RGB Mode — the World of Light

An additive model with a wider gamut, used for screen display.

CMYK Mode — the World of Ink

A subtractive model used for printing, with a narrower gamut.

Converting RGB to CMYK compresses vivid colors into the printable range, making them darker and greyer. This is a physical limitation.

Practical Guide

  • Create files in CMYK mode from the very start of the design
  • Switch to "CMYK preview" regularly to check the result
  • Keep total ink coverage within 280-300%
  • Use spot colors (Pantone) where consistency matters
