What is Color Difference (ΔE)?

Decoding color variance formulas and measuring perceptual Delta E.

What is ΔE?

ΔE (Delta E) measures the difference between two colors. It turns "it looks a bit off" into something you can measure, record and discuss. The smaller the value, the closer the two colors. Different applications accept different ΔE ranges.

Numbers vs. What the Eye Sees

  • • ΔE < 1: virtually invisible; only professionals notice it
  • • ΔE 1-3: visible on close comparison; acceptable for general commercial printing
  • • ΔE 3-6: clearly visible; needs customer sign-off or adjustment
  • • ΔE > 6: severe color deviation, normally unacceptable

Where Does ΔE Come From?

  • • Substrate: coated, white card and kraft stocks all render ink differently
  • • Ink condition: brand, density and drying speed vary
  • • Process conditions: screen ruling, screen angle, registration accuracy, temperature and humidity
  • • Color model: the gamut is compressed when RGB converts to CMYK

Measurement and Control

How to Measure

Use a spectrophotometer (such as an X-Rite) to compare the proof against the target under a standard light source.

Control Targets

For brand primary colors aim for ΔE ≤ 2; for batch-to-batch consistency, ΔE ≤ 3.

Customer Communication

Supply a proof and a ΔE report before delivery to avoid subjective disputes.

Practical Advice

  • For brand colors, prepare both a spot color (Pantone) and an approximate CMYK build
  • At proofing, confirm the final color with substrate + ink + lamination together
  • Spot-check before the full run and keep ΔE variation inside the accepted range
