CMYK formula guide for printing black colors safely.
Single Black (Standard Black)
The standard printing black, made from 100% K ink alone. It cannot show white fringing from misregistration, but large areas can look grey and lack depth.
Rich Black
Adds 40% cyan under the single black, making it look deeper and fuller. The go-to recipe for large black backgrounds.
Neutral Rich Black
Adds balanced amounts of CMY following grey-balance principles, giving a very dense black that leans neither warm nor cool - a truly neutral premium black.
Super Rich Black
Extremely black, but with 240% total ink coverage. It dries slowly and smudges easily. Confirm with your printer before using it, and never use it for small type.
Cool Black
Adds a larger amount of cyan, giving the black a blue, cold cast - common in technology and industrial-style packaging.
Warm Black
Adds magenta and a little yellow so the black takes on a slightly red, warm cast - well suited to food packaging or any design meant to feel warm.
Registration Black
All four inks at 100%, for 400% total ink! Never use it in actual artwork - it causes ink that will not dry, set-off and smearing, and white fringing from misregistration.

* Tip: turn up your screen brightness and the single black (K100) on the right clearly reads grey, while the left and middle stay deep and pure.

How It Prints
It lacks depth: over large areas the paper shows through and the result reads grey and insubstantial, with a grey cast under strong light.
Correct Use (essential)
Body text, fine lines, barcodes and QR codes. To avoid the ghosting and ragged edges that multi-color registration produces, very fine objects must use 100% single black.

A supporting ink underneath (cyan, for example) greatly increases light absorption, so the printed black is deep, heavy and dense - it simply looks more premium.
Correct Use (essential)
Large black background areas, heavy headline type and solid graphic blocks. Rich black noticeably raises the perceived quality of the packaging and the character of the black.
The Classic Beginner Disaster: Screen Black from RGB
Many designers pick pure screen black #000000 (RGB 0,0,0) straight from their software. Converted to CMYK, design applications typically turn it into a four-color black close to C75 M68 Y67 K90!
That pushes total ink coverage above 300%, which not only looks muddy and dull but seriously risks ink that will not dry, set-off on the reverse, and scrapped production! Get into the habit of checking the CMYK panel before releasing artwork, and set large solids manually to C40 K100
