Comprehensive Guide to Box Compression Test (BCT) & McKee Formula
1. What is Box Compression Test (BCT)?
Box Compression Test (BCT) measures the maximum top-to-bottom compressive load a corrugated box can withstand before crushing, measured in Newtons (N) or kilograms (kg). It is the critical benchmark in international freight, logistics, and Amazon FBA fulfillment to ensure bottom-tier cartons do not buckle under pallet stacking pressure.
2. Engineering Methodology: McKee Formula
This calculator implements the industry standard McKee Formula (TAPPI T804, ISO 12048, and FEFCO compliant):
- BCT: Theoretical compressive load capacity (N).
- ECT: Edge Crush Test of the corrugated board (kN/m or N/mm).
- Z: Outside box perimeter (mm), calculated as 2 × (Length + Width).
- h: Total corrugated board caliper thickness (mm).
3. Standard Flute Caliper & Performance Table
| Flute Type | Caliper (mm) | Characteristics & Best Applications |
|---|---|---|
| A Flute | 4.8 mm | Maximum cushioning and excellent vertical crush resistance. Best for fragile or heavy machinery. |
| C Flute | 4.0 mm | Global standard shipping flute. Optimal combination of stacking strength and printability. |
| B Flute | 3.0 mm | High puncture and flat crush resistance. Ideal for retail consumer goods with fine graphics. |
| E Flute | 1.6 mm | Micro flute. High foldability and stiff walls for subscription boxes and cosmetics. |
| BC Double Wall | 7.0 mm | Heavy-duty export standard combining B & C flutes for exceptional sea freight stacking. |
4. Real-World Environmental Degradation Factors
Laboratory conditions do not match real warehouse transit. Our algorithm incorporates four dynamic loss models:
- Moisture Loss: Above 50% RH, each 10% RH increase causes ~7% strength degradation.
- Static Fatigue Creep: Continuous pallet pressure causes fibers to relax. Long storage (90-365 days) reduces strength by 10-20%.
- Slenderness & Buckling: High aspect ratios or tall narrow cartons experience premature side wall buckling.
- Cutouts & Handles: Die-cut hand-holes disrupt vertical load paths, modeled by an exponential decay factor.
