Flexible packaging production is a multi-stage, high-precision process. From substrate printing to the finished pouch it typically passes through 5-6 major stages, each of which is critical to product quality.

🔗 Step 2: Lamination
Two or more different materials are bonded with adhesive, giving the pack a stronger barrier, greater mechanical strength and better protection.
Dry Lamination
Process:
Adhesive coating → drying (solvent removal) → lamination → rewinding
Advantages:
- High bond strength (peel strength ≥2.5 N/15 mm)
- Works with a wide range of materials
- Mature and stable — the most widely used method
Disadvantages:
- Uses solvent-based adhesive with VOC emissions
- Needs a long curing time (48-72 hours)
Solventless Lamination
Process:
Adhesive coating (two-component mix) → direct lamination → rewinding
Advantages:
- Solvent free and compliant with food safety standards
- Short curing time (24-48 hours)
- High throughput
Disadvantages:
- Demands more of the equipment
- Higher adhesive cost
- Strict requirements on substrate surface treatment

🌡️ Step 3: Curing
Curing is the critical stage after lamination. Holding the roll at a set temperature lets the adhesive cure fully and residual solvent evaporate, ensuring bond strength and product safety.
Dry Lamination Curing
- • Temperature: 40-50°C
- • Time: 48-72 hours
- • Purpose: remove residual solvent
- • Environment: curing room / oven
Solventless Curing
- • Temperature: 40-45°C
- • Time: 24-48 hours
- • Purpose: complete adhesive cure
- • Note: significantly shorter
Test Criteria
- • Peel strength ≥2.5 N/15 mm
- • Residual solvent ≤5 mg/m²
- • Appearance: no bubbles or white spots
- • Odor: none
⚠️ Points to Note: Insufficient curing leads to weak bonds, excess residual solvent (a food safety risk) and off-odors. Food packaging must be tested rigorously for residual solvent.
✂️ Step 4: Slitting
The master roll is cut precisely to the customer's width and length, producing daughter rolls sized for the pouch-making machine.
